Locked in but not Listen in
My music listening tendencies have usually looked like the Dow Jones or S&P 500. There are ups and downs but if you pan out, the overall trajectory is up. Well not this year. This year I listened to about half the music I did the year before on Spotify and can tell it will only be decreasing or plateauing with time. I’m also learning about fewer artists with time. All this is very regressive and depressing but to close one door means I can open others.
I do think there is something to be said about the social element of music. Being alone for large parts of the year has likely contributed to less of a drive to tune in. Especially when it comes to new music as there is nothing greater than sharing something new with someone that has yet to experience it. I hope that if anything you can walk away from this article having clicked on a couple videos and come away with a new found appreciation for an artist sound or song. I usually save the best for last but not this year. Enjoy my favorites of 2021.
